So much news, so little time. Here’s another WHIR (Web Hosting Industry Review) article that suggests web host Go Daddy censored www.ratemycop.com.

“The situation was absolutely NOT about censorship in ANY way,” wrote [Go Daddy general counsel Christine] Jones. “The site’s operator has publicly disclosed the concerns were over bandwidth. More accurately, Go Daddy’s concerns were about how the RateMyCop site was far exceeding the amount of server usage for which it had contracted.

“This customer paid for a shared server plan. The connections to his site were six times more than an entire ’shared server’ accommodates. While he was paying for a service that cost $14.99 a month, his site actually required a much more extensive set-up.

The news is interesting in terms of first amendment issues, but this matter also relates to overselling and terms of service (TOS) agreements. A quick check of Go Daddy’s hosting rates finds that the $14.99 plan comes with 3,000GB (3TB) of monthly transfer. Did she say six times the bandwidth? That would be 18TB! That’s one heck of a site. Seems like there should be more advertising.

A recent WHIR (Web Hosting Industry Review) article reports that the North Country Gazette is publicly airing its dissatisfaction with IPOWER. While most online evaluations of web hosts are dubious at best, this particular data point strikes us as credible. The fact that we have yet to see an equally public denial from IPOWER strengthens that assessment.

According to WHIR,

This case against the Web host is just one of many complaints against IPOWER within recent months, prompting many customers to threaten to leave the Web host. Complaints concerning website crashes, poor tech support and billing errors have been rampant since the company merged with Web host Endurance International Group last year.

IPOWER currently has an unsatisfactory record with the Better Business Bureau of Central, Northern and Western Arizona. The latest BBB report on IPOWER lists consumer complaints concerning the Web host’s contracts, billing and repairs. The company has resolved many of these reported issues, but has not yet responded to others. Source: WHIR, NY News Site Calls Out IPower

It’s probably not the best time to admit that IPOWER has been, until recently, under review as a potential BOB host. We’ve known a number of IPOWER customers and they were perfectly happy the last time we checked. Things can change quickly, however, especially when explosive growth provides the backdrop. We’re open-minded and always looking to shake up the BOB roster, but IPOWER won’t be doing the shaking any time soon. Know another web host worthy of consideration? Drop us an email.
